The wait is over!
Behind the Blades: The Making of Dylan’s New Nightmare
is officially complete, and it's not your average behind-the-scenes documentary. Directed, filmed, and edited by Josh Schultz of Mort House Films, this project cuts deeper, delivering an unfiltered, brutally honest look into the indie horror machine that brought a beloved nightmare back to life.
A Behind-the-Scenes Horror Doc Like No Other
From the first frame to the final cut, Behind the Blades captures the blood, sweat, and broken teeth that went into making Dylan’s New Nightmare. Lead actor Dave McRae literally shattered a tooth on the second take of the opening scene. Miko Hughes, reprising his iconic role from Wes Craven’s New Nightmare, threw himself so fully into the role of adult Dylan Porter that he walked away with real facial bruises. That’s the kind of grit this film delivers.
Cynthia Kania delivers a thrilling, unforgettable performance as she’s sliced up sushi-style in one of the film’s most brutal and jaw-dropping moments. And Ron Sloan, best known for Friday the 13th Part V, taps into his own casting trauma to deliver a chilling performance that lingers long after the credits roll.
This documentary isn’t about polished press kits or PR spin. It’s about passion over perfection, chaos turned into craft, and the relentless drive of a team that refused to settle.
A Vision Fueled by Pure Horror Heart
At the center of the madness was writer and director Cecil Laird, whose respect for the Nightmare on Elm Street legacy guided every creative decision. Vincente DiSanti served as first assistant director, keeping the production on track. Ben Meredith, the director of photography, shaped the film’s moody, intense visual identity.
Behind the Blades was shot with the same spirit that fueled the main feature. It’s raw, passionate, and resourceful. This is a love letter to low-budget horror, full of hard-won victories and behind-the-scenes stumbles that most fans never get to see.
